Strong Deformity - Racket |

Strong it is, a deformed mix of galloping metal, garage melodies and hardcore
snipets not unlike the heavier Mentors stuff. The band throws in wandering
phased out guitar solos, sabbathian grooves, the odd keyboards (reminded me
of The Stranglers) and songs well arranged. Strong Deformity are definitely
groovemasters, good to see Austrian label NSM continuing the fight in style.
Sometimes the songs just don't work, like they're stuck in low gear, and some
of the riffs are way too telegraphed. On songs like "Twins" you think
it's going to be like a Mac truck, then it starts sputtering like a
Yugo. Other times, the mix is perfect, like a good piss after a combo
of beer & ephedrine. It is the bomb blast of the delivery that puts Strong
Deformity in the Top 10; Super Dope
is the one to shake the floor and rip through the walls, just superb execution. A definite smash. Fire That Dog Up!

At last a good metal band with someone singing that I can tell what the hell they're saying.
Tight metal reminiscent of "Ride The Lightning" era, especially the shifting spiral of "Painless
Agony", with it's slow grind interlaced with rising power and what I really enjoy most about the band,
lead guitars. Too much metal I hear that's new has none, Resound does them throughout this three cut
sampling of their new album "Crucifix". Second cut Armageddon delivers the goods and speaks about
the glorious fury that is Resound

Monolith - Use Only As Directed

The front cover of this disc says it all, a negative of a hand loading a gun, so you know some
killing is coming down the pike. Cut #1, Leeching, recently debuted in the Underground Top 100 fairly high (like #7). The
buzz-saw grind and the strong shouts are key to the core of Monolith. This young band
fronted by the Bayliss Brothers Eric on Throat and Bass, bro Brian on percussion and the genuis
of Tim Artz on all guitars is a force to be recognized. Calling all pit crews for stuff like
The Unknown (part 2) the feeding is straight metal, no filler or pretty boy bullshit. Monolith
fuckin' rips.
Throughout Use Only As Directed, the pace is kept high, void of death-metal cliches or funk
metal illusion.....the hardcore screaming behind the rage of Weak Minded is a wake-up call
to all the living dead, get your shit together. Monolith throw in an epic - One Friend's
Betrayal - showcasing their music crafting to the hilt. Every once in a while, Monolith go
into a trance, like on the closing This Land Lost, where the sparse versing and overdone
riffs leave the listener wandering....while there is room for improvement, for a debut
release by a young metal band, it's got its moments.

Heavy as a heavy thing. With monster
riffs, doom triads and hardcore vocals, Lambotomy rip and tear like death
on steroids. They're not death metal though, just metal with all the trimmings.
Till 4 A.M is a beast, going from bombast to jazz in a bottomless yell. Ending
on a thud. Some of the hip-hop fashion comes in on the front of Be, changing
gears into some wicked grind. I especially like the line "Hell has a monopoly
on life!"...these guys might be young, but somewhere along the line they've been
twisted. Cut 4 Pin And Needles is homage to the spooky bass that creeps in your
mind at those times of complete anger, like someone is going to get fucked up,
real bad! Sometimes the grind is overwhelming, like on Circle Seven, but
that's the be expected, that's when it's time for another brewski.
Buzzsaw and shock beats abound in Scarred, I'd say it's like Korn but it's a
tradeoff_sometimes Lambotomy are that heavy, and sometimes their hardcore
is heavier_ Scarred does offer some cool lead in a slower mode, if you're
in the mosh pit that is. Really though, the pig squealing crap could've
been left out, but boys will be boys! Somehow, I don't think the guys have
too good an attitude about gals (I fucked her raw!), or maybe it's all that
beer driven testosterone ripping thorugh their veins. Power chords arrive from
Broken Arrow, the opening line "My Life Is Hell" says it all...
Still, last cut, Check-Out Time might be too heavy for the kids, especially
the dope doing gun and knife toting bunch. Check out Lambotomy at an
upcoming Rockfest.

Media Records out of Michigan puts out some of the heaviest shit around, from the gothic
darkness of The Lords Of Algol to this, the resounding hardcore fury of Too Many Gods. Blind
Soul Lottery is their full length following last year's Lullaby EP. There is nothing like
a lullaby (on any Too Many Gods) unless it's a screaming metal serenade from hell, and the
full length contains plenty of anguish, anger and speed. TMG might fuck around with a few
electronic sounds, but bottom line you've got monster riffs, blood rendering screams and
an intense articulate dose of the hard stuff, without any of that cute shit some of the
MTV darlings trying to compete in this arena are floating. TMG has them outclassed throughout.
Got a problem kiddies? Listen to Reflect, you'll see your pitiful problems aren't the piss end of
a rat's ass. If you find yourself inside Reflect, maybe, just maybe, you need professional
help. Otherwise shut the hell up! It is the industrial edge of Mindless, with it's "you don't
listen to me 'cuz I can't help you deceit" as psychotic bastard chorus that'll have all the youth
of america standing up with the single digit salute. After you've slashed and burned your way accross
the disc, brutal calamity and all (see head checking in "We Are Broken"), you're treated to the evil
modular flaying of Scare Tactics complete with hardcore throat damage in the early seconds. Sometimes
as with the noisy punk funk into grindcore of 4 Steps, Too Many Gods come close to complete
identity breakdown, flying off in different directions shaded by the changing dimensions of their
delivery....kinda like those bits of intestine in the chinese hot and sweet soup, it's done
that way for a definite reason, but it's not for you to know.
The electronic opening for the letter y kinda tells you this might be the lame tune on the
record. Over all it's just sludge, like that cooked down tar you been hittin'. I hope you
know aluminum foil causes severe poisoning, and you thought you had some kick ass shit! Overall,
I gotta say the atmospheric trip of the OD in ETU sets off this whole disc, and the final cut,
When The Smoke Clears, just fuckin rules, lyrics, tone and grind. You don't skate, bike or
surf without this CD: RECOMMENDED

Lighting hardcore drums with double bass, changing modds midstream from thrash to doom,
gutter demon vocals, crisy riffs and standard arrangements. Could be outstanding except
the drums are too perfect time wise....this is because of the use of ProTools to record this.
It's good, but the band sounds like they used it a bit, the acoustic feel of the songs has
been diminished. Sometimes I like what Tits, Turd, R2, Foetus and Jester (the guys in the
band) are attempting. They damn sure can play. A little more leeway and originality
they might be dangerous.

Welcome Back Mr. Cowan | |
Very dark death metal with strong musicianship. Vocals are hard at times to
decipher (what's new about death metal?). The strength of the darkness is sometimes overpowering,
but the band can be slightly disjoined. The album has a very strong, solid sound, with some of
the arrangements showing a deepness, probably owing to the fact the core of the group have been
on the European circuit as Skull Crusher since 1990.
This disc overall is definitely for death metal fans, downtuning, gutteral funeral
parts. It's all there. What Skull Crusher really needs is really an identity, because
I can't get much original out of the cuts. Since they're touring with everyone from
Malevolent Creation to Krabathor, they'll be enough dark ones out there who'll get off,
and die for, this stuff.
